Subtitle your videos like a pro

How to subtitle social media videos like a boss.

As some of you may know, as well as illustration I also help make an iOS subtitling app, Captionista. It is a subtitling and captioning app for adding text to your social media videos. It’s super fast and easy, with lots of free font styles. A bunch of new featured have been added in the 1.5 release including iPad Hover, SRT Export, Colour Trends, Full Screen Zoom and Freestyle - move, rotate and resize individual subtitles.

Captionista makes subtitling and captioning your social media posts a breeze, but to help even more Marc has put together a very handy list of tips that will help you add great subtitles to your videos, whatever app you use. Click here to read the article

Robert De Niro Sketch Process Video Using Procreate and Captionista

Speed painting of my Robert De Niro sketch created in Procreate. Inspired by my new book purchase, “The Art of Bob Peak” I wanted to match his sketching style and colour palette.

The subtitles were made using CaptionistaApp, an app @marcpalmerdev and I have been working on that allows you to quickly add subtitles to videos in iOS.

The original video file, exported from Procreate was in a portrait format, which meant Twitter and Instagram would crop the top and bottom, cutting off the subtitles. So I needed to make it square to fit social feeds better. This can all be done on the iPhone or iPad using free apps, see here for a breakdown of how I do it.

Adding subtitles was very easy. I just typed in my painting process in the text editor and then, in the timing editor I tapped the word to start a new subtitle at the correct time in the video.

MICHAEL HOROVITZ - GOOD ON PAPER ISSUE 75

Honoured to be asked to illustrate a tribute to Michael Horovitz OBE for the cover to theIssue 75 of Good On Paper magazine.

The passing of Michael Horovitz has left big hole in the local Stroud community as well as the wider poetry and art community at large.

With this artwork I have endeavoured to represent his many creative outlets and talents as well as the inspiration Michael has given to younger generations.

Based on a photograph of his performance at the landmark International Poetry Incarnation at the Royal Albert Hall in 1965.

This was created entirely on an Apple iPad using Procreate.

Saint Maud Alternative Poster by Mark Levy Art

A24 Saint Maud now streaming in the UK.

I was blown away by it. An incredibly dark, terrifying debut from Rose Glass, and Morfydd Clark is electrifying. Go watch now, if you're brave enough.

Using imagery and colours inspired by both the film and William Blake I just had to create this alternative movie poster.

Tokyo Story Alternative Movie Poster

Now I have a subscription to the BFI streaming service I finally made the time to watch this 1953 Japanese classic about family life in Tokyo. This is such an elegant film with a deliberate pace, filled with nuance and humanity. It's melancholy tone is frequently punctuated by humour and beauty. The stand out is Setsuko Hara, who is the true heart of the film.

Psycho Tonal Studies

Quick tonal Sketches from Hitchcock's Psycho. My brief was to focus on composition and lighting and not really pay too much attention to likeness, although you gotta love Anthony Perkins cheekbones.
My daughter had to watch the 1960 classic for her Film Studies course. It was the first time watching it and I hadn't watched it in years. It didn't disappoint.
When we got the the shower scene my daughter said, "Oh so this is where that music comes from!" Not many of the movies we have watched since hasn't had at least one moment where we have noticed the influence of Psycho.

1917 Steel Book Blu-Ray Mock Up - Alt movie poster

I thought I wold mock up a Steel Book Blu-Ray in the style of Zavvi with my 1917 alternative poster design on the front.

I have been experimenting with multiple uses of Smart Objects in Photoshop. The idea is to only have to place two images ( the dvd cover and the spine) and it updates the whole image - the reflection and background colour etc). I am still ironing out the bugs but once I have done this I should be able to easily make a whole set of Steel Book Blu-Ray mock ups with other alternative movie poster designs.

1917 Alternative Movie Poster

Concerns that the "one shot" filming technique would take me out of the film soon evaporated as I became increasingly engrossed in the story of these two young soldiers sent on a very simple mission to get a letter to the front line. Amazing set pieces, heartfelt performances and just great story telling.⠀

AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON ALTERNATIVE MOVIE POSTER

I first saw this film aged nine. The babysitter said, “It’ll be fine. It’s a comedy”... I didn’t sleep for two weeks.

I still think this is the high bar for comedy horrors that no one else has quite managed to achieve.

The OA and The Crown - A Netflix Tribute

I was very excited to have been invited to participate in The Poster Posse tribute to all things Netflix. I chose to create posters for The Crown and The OA. Both shows are shining examples of the diverse range of genres Netflix have on offer.

I created two variants for The OA. One that leans into the science fiction elements of the show and the other is a homage to Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s first film together, the brilliant Sound Of My Voice.

I find it amazing that Queen Elizabeth II was crowned a full year before the official coronation. This was a tradition used to show respect for the deceased previous monarch. With this in mind I decided to depict a scene where Winston Churchill has just received an invitation to the Coronation. The stamp used on the envelope showing Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II.

Christopher Nolan Minimal Movie Poster Designs

Taking inspiration from classic grid design, originating from Switzerland, I have created minimal poster designs based on three movies from Christopher Nolan’s amazing filmography.

Memento

Although he already used non-linear story telling in his debut, Following, here Nolan uses a backwards plot structure to be the main hook of the movie.

I have used a spiral to represent not only the backwards timeline but also the degrading state of Leonard's (Guy Pearce) mind. The crosses symbolise the various events that Leonard deems important enough to tattoo all over his body.

Interstellar

Arguably the most emotional of Nolans films. The scene were Coop watches the videos from his children after escaping Miller's ocean planet is devastating.

This design suggests how, during space travel Coop and Brand's journey causes time to be inconsistent and undulate as they travel trough wormholes and near black holes.

Inception

My favourite of Nolans movies so far, or at least the most "re-watchable". First class action set pieces and mind-bending, intricately plotted story about that desperate need to just get "home".

Did the spinning top wobble or not?

Here I have used ever decreasing squares to symbolise Cobb and his team’s journey into the dreams within dreams. Each square is made up of hundreds of rectangles, showing the cityscape folding in on itself.

Beetlejuice - Part of the Film Posters - Reinterpreted exhibition

“Let’s turn on the juice and see what shakes loose”

Alternative poster for Tim Burtons 1988 classic comedy horror Beetlejuice starring Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin and Winona Ryder.

This piece was created for the Good On Paper Film Posters Reinterpreted 80’s exhibition. The only brief was it had to be any film from the 1980’s. I chose Beetlejuice!

This art was created entirely using Procreate ion the iPad
